Please join us on Saturday, October 19, 2019 for an evening of great fun while you support art education for all ages in our community.

RISE! is the theme for our annual fundraiser this year. We believe that we must come together to rise above division and against negativity and hatred. We celebrate our community as we welcome over 200 guests to our studios for delicious food, delightful drinks, dancing, art activities, and amazing auction items.

Proceeds from the evening provide access to the visual arts for everyone from toddlers to older adults throughout Prince George's County and the District of Columbia.

If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities please contact Assata Terrell, Advancement Associate, at assata@artworksnow.org or 301-454-0808.

MEET THIS YEAR’S AWARDEES

RISA SHAW
RISE! AWARDEE

Making noise, speaking up, showing up, taking action, making art, making beauty all bring joy and give life to Risa Shaw, Phd, who is a lifelong educator and comrade in movements for liberation and justice. Collaboration and community – whether it’s with her neighbors or the activists and movement communities – nourish her spirit, and bring her into conversation and relationship. She engages with and encourages people of every age to be fierce and powerful and to work to create a world for all of us to thrive.

DENI TAVERAS
FIREDUP AWARDEE

Deni Taveras was re-elected to her second 4-year term on the Prince George’s County Council in 2018. Council Member Taveras represents the areas of Adelphi, Avondale, Brentwood, Carole Highlands, Chillum, Cool Spring, Green Meadows, Hyattsville, Langley Park, Lewisdale, Mount Rainier, and North Brentwood.

Taveras currently serves as Chair of the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment committee.  Deni is focused on school and Purple Line construction and developing our Transit Centers in Prince George’s Plaza, West Hyattsville, and future Purple Line stops.  She is a strong advocate for education equity and social justice issues, seeking to improve the lives of working families and diverse communities.

Taveras holds a dual Master’s degree in public affairs and urban regional planning from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School, a Master’s degree from the University of Utah, and a Bachelor’s degree from Barnard College; the latter two in chemistry.

ANN & JONATHAN BARRETT

Two busy professionals, this dynamic duo provides us with a model for community engagement. Whenever there is a need, Ann and Jon are there; wherever there is a cause to be taken up, the Barrett’s engage; and when we all need to be uplifted, we can count on these beautiful community leaders to bring us together in joyous celebration.
