In conjunction with the 2018 Spring Open Studios, Art Works Now is excited to feature “In My Shoes”, an exhibition of recent paintings by Rafael Rodriguez.
Every year at this time I am given the opportunity to express my gratitude for all that you’ve done to support the work we do throughout the year. In reflecting on the year that is coming to a close, I’m doing a lot of mental sorting. How do we talk about all the good that has happened while acknowledging the challenges?
These are dark days.
Literally. The darkest days of the year.
It was amazing to see everyone at our annual Fall Fundraiser!
With the generous support from our sponsors and community, Art Works Now received over $100,000 in cash and in-kind support for our young artists!

This summer Art Works Now and The City of Hyattsville have partnered to bring art to the Seniors of Hyattsville, Maryland.
The students divided into three teams to design and create three murals. The themes of the murals were Social Justice, The Environment, and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.)

It’s been a little over a month since the Art Works board of directors approved the Creative Day Policy where full time salaried staff at Art Works are urged to work 72 hours, create or learn for 8 hours, and get paid for 80 hours per pay period.

A lot of people think that Art Works is just for kids. We do love our young artists. And we spend a lot of time and energy designing curriculum that is fun and educational for them.
Immediately I thought of our new Art Works property, the abandoned Marche Florist building at 4800 Rhode Island Avenue in Hyattsville, Maryland.
“This is absolutely an equity issue and a civil rights issue.”
Today I heard someone on the radio refer to the present time as “late summer.” I refuse to accept that! I corrected her, out loud (in my car alone), with a vehement, “midsummer!”
We are excited to have the chance to provide art instruction, play, and social interaction for our kids during these hot Washington summers!
These young women – and their work – remind me today of the reason I founded Art Works Now in 2011. I had been teaching art at a nearby high school for several years…
