Art Works Now features “In My Shoes” by Rafael Rodriguez
On Saturday, May 12, studios, art organizations, and galleries throughout the Gateway Arts District will open their doors to the public. In conjunction with the 2018 Spring Open Studios, Art Works Now is excited to feature “In My Shoes”, an exhibition of recent paintings by Rafael Rodriguez.
Rafael was born in Santa Rosa de Lime, a small town in El Salvador, and was raised in the village of Lajoya. In 2013, he decided to move to the United States in order to find a safe place away from the violence in El Salvador. After arriving in Maryland and enrolling in Northwestern High School, he discovered his love for art. Upon completing his first art class he joined the Visual and Performing Arts Program and participated in the Creative Works job training program at Joe’s Movement Emporium. Rafael graduated in May 2017 and spent the summer as an apprentice at Arts on the Block.
Rafael’s art not only reflects his life as an individual, but also the lives of many other young immigrants in this country who work hard towards their dreams. Currently, he is studying Studio Art at Montgomery Community College, and has a studio space at Red Dirt Studio. His goal is to one day become an art teacher and use the arts to contribute to making a better life for the youth of El Salvador.
Exhibition on display until May 15, 2018
Art Works Now is located at 4800 Rhode Island Ave, Hyattsville MD
