I learned early on that the role of the teaching artist is more about giving to my students than it is about lecturing at them. The reason to give is simple. When we give, we share our moment-to-moment experiences in the ways that we know how. Whether we do it through story, music, or the visual arts, being in a place of giving opens up the possibilities for receiving. I learn from the children I teach, perhaps even more than they learn from me. I give all I have and, not surprisingly, the children give all they have – in discussions, their work, and the way they open themselves to discovery. Together we answer one another’s questions, solve puzzles, and make beautiful art.
The teachers and staff at Art Works Now give all they have every day. This is one of the many things for which I am thankful this year, to be able to enjoy working alongside so many gifted, creative, and generous professionals.
